Robert Garrigus made a strong recovery, holing a 50-foot eagle putt on the final hole for a four-under 69 and a share of the third-round lead with Steve Stricker and Jonathan Byrd in the season-opening Tournament of Champions at Kapalua, Hawaii.

Stricker shot a 65 in the toughest conditions of the week. Byrd had a 67.

Then came Garrigus, who opened with a double bogey and a bogey to fall out of the lead. He lingered the rest of the day until the end, when his 50-foot putt banged in for an eagle.

The trio of Americans were at 18-under 201. An American has not won at Kapalua since 2002.

Carl Pettersson (71) was 15 under.

More golf: British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa bogeyed his last hole to fall into a tie for the lead of the Africa Open with Markus Brier of Austria heading into the final round. Oosthuizen had a four-under 69, while Brier shot a 70 as they finished the third round at 13-under 206, a stroke ahead of defending champion Charl Schwartzel of South Africa and three others.

Skiing: Lindsey Vonn won the women's downhill in Austria to capture her fourth win of the season and move her within four victories of Anja Paerson's record of 41 World Cup titles. Vonn, the three-time defending overall champion, finished in 1 minute, 46.39 seconds. It's Vonn's 20th career downhill title and 37th overall.

Baseball: The Texas Rangers acquired right-hander Ryan Kelly from the Oakland Athletics for right-hander Guillermo Moscoso. The deal came a day after the Rangers designated Moscoso for assignment to clear room on their 40-man roster for newly acquired All-Star third baseman Adrian Beltre.

Tennis: Roger Federer won the Qatar Open without dropping a set when he beat defending champion Nikolay Davydenko, 6-3, 6-4. Federer became the first three-time winner in Doha, following titles in 2005 and 2006.
