Passengers stranded on Missouri lake cruise boat

(CNN) -- Hundreds of people were stranded on a paddleboat in a Missouri lake early Sunday, hours after it ran aground during a cruise, a spokeswoman for the company that owns the boat said.

The 567 passengers and 76 crew members onboard the Showboat Branson Belle will have to wait until dawn for rescuers to reach them, said Lisa Rau, a spokeswoman for boat owner Herschend Family Entertainment.

"It has been determined that the safest thing to do is to leave the boat where it is until the winds die down," Rau said.

The boat left the dock in Branson, Missouri, at 4 p.m. Saturday and ran aground in Table Rock Lake after the captain had problems with the thruster during the cruise, which was scheduled to last 2 1/2 hours.

The incident left hundreds of passengers trapped on a boat with no sleeping accommodations.

The boat is heated and has electrical power, Rau said. Also, the people onboard have food and beverages.

"It's not the best case scenario, but we're doing everything we can to make sure everybody's as comfortable as possible," Rau said.

The Showboat Branson Belle is a 750-seat paddleboat cruise with no gambling or alcohol, she said.

The boat's featured "Showstoppers" performance includes 30 songs, according to the cruise website.
