Packers Fans Invade Windy City Empty

Those words come from Kyle Fleener, an Illinois resident but a green-and-gold supporter in the Windy City this weekend for Sunday’s much-hyped, much-anticipated, and much-analyzed NFC Championship Game between historic rivals the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers.

Just as only one NFC North team can make it to this year’s Super Bowl, only one NFC North team can host Sunday’s Championship Game.

And though they’re in enemy territory, invading Packers fans are doing all they can to push their team to victory.

Packers fans not only travel well, but they’re loud. And even those who don’t have tickets for Sunday’s game are trying to make their voices heard first and foremost in the "Second City."

But rooting for the visiting Packers isn’t without its dangers.

"This is very hostile country," said Fleener, who as a Packers fan is getting the clear message that "you're not very well liked around here."

On every corner, Fleener says that he is reminded that he is living and working in a Bears town, which has been especially tough this week.

"There's a ton of hype around here," said Fleener. "The Bears fans are crazy. There's a lot of trash talking at work, outside of work. You know, they think they're going to win."

While enjoying skating at Millennium Park on Saturday, Fleener said Sunday will be all business. And all about the green and gold.

"I think it's just one of those times in your life when you realize you have to let your true colors bleed through and stand up for the team you believe in," said Fleener.

Fleener isn’t alone in cheering for the Packers in Bear Country. As game time quickly approaches, Green Bay fans are appearing everywhere.

Like Chelsea Hurst, who is visiting from Madison with some friends. They are busy seeing the sights, but what she really wants to see are the Packers in the Super Bowl.

Even if her enthusiasm is cause for concern among her parents.

"You got to stay strong and be a true Packer fan, you know," said Hurst. "I love representing the Packers. I'm going to wear my jersey tonight down at the bars. My mom doesn't want me to, but I'm up for the challenge."

But for all of the younger fans enjoying the rivalry, there are more seasoned veterans who know what it's really all about.

Irene Stock of Green Bay has been a lifelong fan who knows that as heated as the Packers-Bears rivalry gets, in the end it’s about competition, respect, and may the best team win.

"I think one of my most memorable games at Lambeau was with seven Bears fans," remembered Stock. "Absolutely wonderful. I had the time of my life, it was so much fun. But would they high-five me when we had a touchdown? No."

Some Green Bay faithful have been able to find solace and companionship in a few Packers parties and rallies in town, but by and large, they realize they know they’re the minority.

Just not a silent one.
